WWR Day 39 Bryce Canyon to Deer Springs Ranch
WWR Day 39 Bryce Canyon to Deer Springs Ranch
Mon Sept 16, 2019
Distance about 32
Start elevation 7690
End elevation 7230
High point probably 8520
Low point 6230
Climbing maybe 1400'
Ride time 3:50
Total time about 4:50
Days bike camping: 28
Contiguous days riding : 10
Morning came in mostly cloudy at busy Ruby's Inn RV park. But old Sol chased many away during the morning ritual.
Another later start but the day is not super long. My ride takes me back up through Bryce and then exiting via a service road to the NF on the west side.
Route say a pedestrian gate at the NP boundary, and sure enough, there is. It is however, paddle locked, so I get to hump my steed and gear over. No traffic on the other side!!
More rollers over a few small ridges, all of the bigger ridges have Bryce envy with their more subdued pink cliff breaks. Just a few hoodoos here and there.
The climb up Crawford Pass is only 900 feet but as I turn to head south there is a mighty stiff head wind coming down the valley. Combined with the regular rollers on the climb, it is a bit challenging.
I run across the piped Tropic Spring Water Stop. I too stop and take a break to eat a bit there. A couple come by to fill all of their many, many water bottles there. The FS told them it is potable. Pity, I don't need any more water for the ride and my evening destination will have water.
Back at it. I look back regularly to check on the most recent Bryce envy attempt, there are many many pink cliffs and hoodoos wannabes.
The aspens show up about 8000 feet and I eventually summit the pass. There is a large group of ATVers there and I chat up a couple from Vegas. Nice folks, they give me a couple of bottles of water and a big box of Skittles to power me thru my ride.
The road is rougher on the way down, and often has an inch or two of powdery sorts hiding the firm surfaces and the rocks. A little bit of extra caution is called for.
I finally enter the Deer Spring Ranch, which looks to be a working longhorn ranch with several remote subdivisions in the hills.
My goal is the headquarters, where there is camping and showers.
I get there and this ain't no dude ranch. But I like it, there are plenty of chairs and picnic tables, and I get to set my tent up on the hrassy lawn. There is a bit of a menagerie here, a sheep, pot bellied pig, half dozen pygmy goats, a friendly pooch, peacock, and a variety of chickens. Dolly the sheep is tricksy and stole my banana for tomorrow, damn her.
Well I have enough food to get to Kanab.
With the chickens, I suspect I won't be sleeping in tomorrow
