A blue sky morning as I walk over to Dirks Farmhouse restaurant next door for a heaping breakfast. Can't really cook on the motel room, gosh, have to skip the adultrated oatmeal this morning- what a shame!
A leisurely morning as I have a short and relatively flat day to ride the 30 ish miles to Salina. A chat with the proprietor informs me the fire of yesterday is on the west side of I-15, about 100 miles away, and no where near the route!
The Dutch Brams ( remember them?) also did a skyline bypass from hwy 6 and have shared a back roads route from Manti to Salina. My tour continues of Mormon ranchers and farmers making the desert bloom through irrigation. It is a pleasant journey, traversing a few small prosperous looking villages and outlying ranches. Not many rundown places in these rural parts.
There is often stark differences between irrigated and native vegetation, which catches my eyes. Things are still pretty green in the fields, and the water is still flowing. I do hit some badlands area between valley bottom and Wasatch plateau foothills, adding some color to the tawny landscape.
I reach Willow Creek Reservoir and am back on route with a 7 mile glide into Salina.
When I reach Salina, I stop at the grocery store to get a meal for tomorrow night and head to RV park. I contemplate riding further to shorten the big day tomorrow, but satellite view show an intermittant ribbon of green in dryness for quite a while. Can't beat the RV park @ $12 for showers and grassy campsite, albeit it gets prime view of Hwy 89.
After establishing camp, shower, and rinsing out bike wear, I head back to the grocery store with my final list, and discover the state license liquor store. I sometimes check if convienence and grocery stores sell single beers of anything flavorful. After initial perusal comes up with the same 40 oz Mickey's ilk, a chat with the owner reveals a fine Wasatch brew, the Devastator, a double bock, again with a jab at the predominant local CULTure..
I get a can and have my first beer in Utah on this trip, a happy half hour at the RV park before dinner.
Ahhhh.....

I hope that Devastator is not an omen for the remaining trip.
ReplyDeleteFine choice! I noticed on the label that you may now be a member of a cult in Utah.
