Day 30 =Restart preparation
Day 30 =Restart preparation
Fri. Sept 6,2019
Well the hiatus in Colorado has come and gone so swiftly.
Got to spend time with Glenda, and see my daughter Fiona off to University as well; both are a big big plus.
Just finished up a 4 day llama trek in the Wenimiche wilderness of the high. San Juan Mountainsin south western Colorado. Went with Glenda and some friends for 8 totla humans and 4 llama. Quite a cool area and a great experience. Great time with the friends , and the luxuries one can bring into the wilderness area with a llama doing the hauling.
Decided to take a day off after the llama trek and Glenda and I explored a bit around Grand Junction. Found the some petroglyphs and a wonder canyon stream in a pot holed layer in the sandstone canyon. We did a little stream hiking and wading (and sliding). The rocks were surprisingly grippy despite their polished curves and faces, not slick. Some of the deeper potholes we waded were 4 to 5 feet deep. A wonderfully beautiful respite on a high 90's fall day on the far western slope of Colorado.
I start tomorrow from Soldier Summit, Utah, perhaps missing 4 or 5 days of riding from Evanston.
I did get a chance to check out the route, plan some riding days, and research current fire information.
One fire has reroute into Flagstaff, and another has a closure adjacent to route near Bryce. Both fires are in mop up and monitor stage to reduce fuels.
There are a couple of fires on the north rim of the Grand Canyon, on the Kaibab Plateau which reduces the appeal of the alternative route through those forested highlands.
My restart is a re baptism in climbing, as I have a 3000'+ climb on day 1. Hope all of that hiking at 12000' in the San Juans help prepare me :-)

Yea, I have been missing ur blog updates and pics, ride on, best wishes.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dennis, we will see how the legs and lungs hold out.
DeleteIt was a very pleasant experience with the llamas and along with the Happy Hour at the top of the world (with iced down beer), the group would like to thank Dan and Glenda for bringing one special luxury item: the White Throne!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the trip as well, including the "share the joy" elements.
DeleteThose were some great views at happy hour, as well a couple of, lower, white throne spots!!
