End elevation 5302
High point 5700
Low point 4902
Climbing 1200?
Ride time 4:42
Total time about 6:00
Days bike camping: 16
Contiguous days riding : 6
The wind has died down over night and it is a nice and sunny day, again. Caretaker says it is suppose to get windy again. I hope it is from the west again, and is my aid
I get some more water from the boys, packup and leave.
Not sure if I will stay at Craters of the Moon National monument, or ride through to Arco.
I will make a call at the monument.
I follow the Little Wood River from campground. Homes start quickly that shift to irrigated fields. The river diminishes before I head east on a mix of gravel and paved roads. The wind is aiding my progress as I gain US Hwy 20, and pushes me as I climb toward the NM.
The wind is growing as I enter the lava fields.
A string of bicyclists start passing me on their unladened road bikes. Many are friendly and chatty and slow down to my loaded speed. I envy their skinny tires, but know they can't go the places I can.
I take lunch at the the visitor center and drink fresh cold water, yum. Dry riding and wind parches one faster. I decide to avoid camping in the dry, windy lava desolation and head to Arco.
I do drop my bags and explore the park a bit, and it is pretty gusty, swirling around phantasms of lava.
I retrieve my paniers and head down, ad the part is the high point for the day.
I make amazing time on the highway and firgo a few extra dirt miles to get to town earlier, as I need to shop and research options for the next sections.
As I roll into Arco, I see the cliffs that watch over the town are adorned with numbers left by the various graduating classes. Entertaining local color, as is the Pickle b Place Restaurant where refuel mad enjoy a local Idaho brew.
