Had a good night rest on the comfy car camping sleeping pad on Kevin and Peggy's deck.
They shared breakfast and coffee and conversation with me. Great experience. I get going early as the bike shop awaits.
Chip is the owner and mechanic. And he takes very good care of me.
In addition to the tire and the brake rotor, I see that the rack bolt has broken on the rotor side too.
Chip mounts a new tire, a Maxxis Recon 2.8.
He doesn't have a replacement rotor but straightens it out. Says the brake pads still have a lot of life but I replace as it is a royal hassle to get the wheel off due to interference with the rack. I now have some back up brake pads. He trues the wheel, makes sure the cassette is torqued correctly, as well as the rotor. I ask him to check the front rotor torque. He extracts the broken rack bolt and finds a replacement bolt for the rack mount, so I don't have to use one of my spares.
All awhile we are chatting about biking, trails, skiing, our histories (Chip is a contemporary, and was a top 5 nationally ranked mogul skier, back in the day.) We bemoan the loss of well formed bumps with the advent of snowboards and now short skis. Ahh, it was an enjoyable conversation.
Time for the test ride. Things feel good, but there is still notable pulsing in the rear brakes. Chip shows the rotor ding (that I missed yesterday, sigh), but says it is still safe to go. But now, he thinks he can file it down. 5 minutes of expert application and 2nd test ride is flawless. Amazing work, I am super impressed with that and the great care he has given me and my steed.
So wow, 3 bike issues happened just a handful of miles before the last bike shop for hundreds of miles. Serendipity, and in spite of the bike travails, a great set of experiences in Hailey.
I load up the bike and head to grocery store for supplies and lunch.
I get rolling about noon down the paved rail trail to Bellevue. Then up into the hills for the 10ish miles climb up 1200' to Muldoon Summit. This is the dry side of the valleys, ranches cover the narrow valley for a few miles.
I run into another rider heading the other way, making a loop with the GDR from Calgary to WY and then over to WWR.
He has been fighting the wind that will be my friend on the climb.
But then up and up the barren side, some occasional groves litter clefts in the hills across the way.
I summit and it is a ripping down hill. Plus the wind is at my back. I eventually catch up to the Little Wood River and it's attendent cottonwood groves filled in with willows. Elsewhere it is dry and arid sage lands, and the wind is blowing harder as the afternoon grows long. I reach the the Little Wood reservoir, me it surprisingly nice. Rather than dry sage campsite, it is watered, there are many trees and shade, and every campsite is watered and grassy. The price is right so I stay.
The water system is contaminated with e coli however. I figure I can get water from res, but it is so churned up from the wind and algae, I don't think it willwork.
The kind care taker offers me some water from her dwindling stores. It helps, but I could use more. I go a begging from a neighbor, and they are generous. They are 3 adult sons and their dad spending a weekend together, great to see .
It is super windy and I am driven into tent early.
