Gotup earlier than normal as I have a big big climb and it is gonna be in the high 90's again today, at least down low.
Another blue sky morning, river singing its endless song as I go through morning rituals and prep the bike. I have packed everything the night before to reduce morning prep time, and also took some extra weight off since I will have nearly 5000' climb today, over 30 miles, ugh. Mileage will be nearly 50 miles too. Challenging day ahead indeed.
I remember waking up last night thinking I hadn't rotated my holey front tire hole side down so the the sealant can work on it overnight, and sure enough the tire is much softer than yesterday. I check the tire casually and don't see anything else, so I pump it back up and see how it does while I finish prepping.
It's been 5 days since initial leak, and I want to change the tire. I see a little pimple of of the Stan sealant for days now, and don't feel good about that dont really have experience with Stan's but the is larger than a cactus sound oft referenced online. I have a used backup tire (same model) in the truck, and am planning on doing that on our planned day off tomorrow in remote Elk City.
You may be wondering about the plethora of words about my tire, especially given how poorly I type on my phone. If so read on!
Tire has me a bit skittish. It seems to be holding air OK, but check with Glenda how long she is going to be at camp before moving, Backup communication tricks, her plans.
I start my day, another stretch along the beautiful Selway River. I did about 7 or 8 miles yesterday and have more today, though I lose US Hwy 12 (not too busy for a US Hwy) and gain the much quieter Selway River Road.
I cross the bridge at the confluence of the Lochsa and Selway rivers, where the middle fork of the Clearwater begins. I am cruising on smooth pavement past a number of homes and cottages along the river. Very pretty country, but clear that fire got close on some of the overlooking ridges.
As I cruise up river, I am wishing I had cleaned my sports glasses last night , as the inner layer of the two lense laters are smeared a bit with sweat from the previous day's. This makes things look hazy. But as I turn some bends it is more hazy further up river. Could that be smoke,? Now I smell it. Damn? Wonder where the fire is, is it on or near route?. There is a ranger station about a mile ahead I decide to stop in.
Suddenly there is intermittant clouds right in front of me, spraying at the cadence my front tire! Damn, the hole blew. I get a few facefuls of sealent and then does it's job again.
I do continue to range station a quarter mile away, and gather info on the smoke.
Yep there are a couple of small fires up in the high mountains, won't impact my route or the MacGruder corridor. Smoke is here cause it flows down the valleys.
I go back out side and the tire is still good, I decide another couple of miles to O'Hara CG would be good to checkout, and Glenda is hiking up river. The campground is real nice, shady, but our spot above the beach at wild goose is better I think.
My goal now is to get back before Glenda leaves and change my tire.
I turn around worried that Glenda has skipped past me. I speed back down the nine miles of wonderful river road riding and 1/4 mile from camp mount Vesuvius spouts again, another temperamental eruption. It quickly seals again after another spraying of sealent on Dan and bike alike.
Glenda is still hiking, so time for another tea at the trailer and reading.
Repairs went well and we just camped another night at the beach site of Wild goose.

Would have loved to see a selfie of you and Stan together :)
ReplyDeleteAnyways, glad it worked out in the end.
Still finding Stan's on my bike. A few shower eventually got it off if my legs and arms.
